Ghetto mask ideas part 2. Green Lantern crab mask
Back again with a how to for my favorite Green Lantern Kyle Rayner's "crab" mask. This could be extremely cheap to free depending on what materials you already have. For this I only need to buy the metallic emerald green paint, and that was about $3.00 on ebay.
What you'll need:
cardboard
green paint
glue
newspaper
a pair of cheap sunglasses
scissors
tape
bowl
optional: white paper, string
The first thing I did was put tape on various parts of the sunglasses then I put the sunglasses on and marked the areas that I was going to want the cardboard parts to lay. The next thing I did was determine how wide was the cardboard going to need to be to fit on the sunglasses the way I wanted them to. After I determined that I drew the "crab" portion of the mask on a piece of cardboard (from the post office, it's free yo!) and cut it out, after having made sure that the cardboard fit as I liked I made a second piece on cardboard and taped them together. I then decided to put some more detail in the look and wanted to make the eyebrow area pop out more so I cut out a four small pieces of cardboard and fitted them on the crab piece at the eyebrow area, taping two together for each side.
After getting the crab design how I liked it I taped it down onto the sunglasses using my markings from earlier to help guide the positioning. Once that was taped on I got some cardboard in order to cover my nose, (this may very depending on style of crab mask and size of nose) I just cut out two smaller triangle shaped pieces and taped them onto the sunglasses. Then you want to tape up the whole thing to make it easier to remove from paper mache, at this point it looked something like this.
Next it's time for the paper mache, so get a bowl and mix about 1/2 cup of glue with about 1/2 cup of water (I only used 1/4 cup of glue). Remember that you want to rip the newspaper vertically for the cleanest of rips. When you place the newspaper on it do so in a vertical manner so all the strips lay vertically, for the second layer I put them on horizontally that way I could easily tell which spots had already been covered. Let it dry for a few hours, I let it dry overnight to be safe.
After it has dried apply layers three and four similar to one and two, if you like you can do the fourth layer with white paper, which will really make the painting part easier. Now let it dry again.
After its all been dried I carefully removed the sunglasses and cardboard base (if not properly dried, it will try to keep paper mache with it.). With the base removed I used scissors to cut any loose pieces, if you'd like you can use sand paper to smooth it out more, next I marked where I was going to put the eyes and carefully cut out some eye holes. Next comes the painting part, I painted about three coats of paint on it, I would let it dry after each coat.
Now that it's done if you'd like you can make some holes and attach some string to it so you can wear it on your face.
